Have you already invested in emergency kits for your home and car? Do you already have one or more water purification systems and several days worth of food stored away?
What’s next on your list? Where should you focus your efforts beyond 72 hour kits?
One of the most important items to have on hand in a disaster is a working emergency radio. The best choice for an emergency radio is one that can be AC operated as well as solar and hand-crank charged. This is a radio that will operate under virtually any circumstances. You won’t need to worry about replacing batteries, and it will work both night and day.
Your emergency radio should cover AM, FM, weather, aviation and TV bands. Access to short band, too is ideal. You never know how information will be transmitted, or from where. The more coverage you have the better. A good emergency radio will also be waterproof and feature easy-to-read LED displays. Those that feature a flashlight are even handier.
Keep your emergency radio close to your emergency kits, and test it from time to time to be sure it still works. Communication will be critical in an emergency, and your radio may well be the only lifeline you have to the outside world.
